The tarot is a Western divination tool made up of 78 cards. Born in medieval Europe, it uses a complete system of symbolic imagery to reflect the inner world of the person asking and the unfolding of their situation. It is not "fortune-telling" — it is a mirror for the soul, helping you see the answers you have, in truth, always known but never quite noticed.

Where Does the Tarot Come From?

The history of the tarot can be traced back to medieval Europe. From the earliest hand-painted cards to the wide reach of modern printing, the tarot has traveled from mysterious ritual to popular entertainment. In the late 19th century, with the rise of various occult organizations, the tarot was woven together with astrology, alchemy, and other disciplines, forming the modern tarot system we know today.

As for its name, the most widely told story traces it to the Egyptian words "TAR" and "RO," said to mean "the royal way" and wise decision-making. Whatever its debated origins — from Egypt's "sacred journey" to the playing cards of the Romani people — the tarot has always been seen as a way for the wise to pass ancient wisdom down through the ages.

78 Cards: 22 Major + 56 Minor

A complete tarot deck is made up of 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana — 78 cards in all. "Arcana" means "profound secrets," and to the medieval alchemists, these secrets were nothing less than the mysteries of nature itself.

  • The Major Arcana (22 cards): Numbered 0 to 21, from The Fool and The Magician to The World, they represent life's great stages and central lessons, offering high-level teachings for the soul.
  • The Minor Arcana (56 cards): Divided into four suits — Wands, Swords, Cups, and Pentacles — corresponding to the four elements of fire, air, water, and earth. They attend to the concrete details of daily life: places, times, situations, and people.

The Major and Minor Arcana are linked and complete one another: the Major cards sketch the outline of fate, while the Minor cards fill in the texture of life. Only by bringing the two together can you arrive at a complete insight.

The Tarot Is Not Fortune-Telling — It Is a Mirror

Many people first come to the tarot hoping to "predict good or bad fortune." But once you truly understand it, you will find that the tarot is more like a map of the soul — it reveals the hidden forces and untapped potential within the unconscious, guiding you to know your inner self, discover who you are, and find your way along unknown roads.

Just as the I Ching speaks of yin and yang, every tarot card has both a light and a shadow side: upright, it carries its upright meaning; reversed, it speaks in its reversed voice. Drawing a favorable card is no reason for complacency — it is a reminder to seize the moment. And drawing a "frightening" card is no reason for despair — Death has never been about dying, but about the truth that "growth always comes with the passing of things."

The tarot does not make your decisions for you. It simply holds the lantern higher, so you can see the path beneath your feet.

How Do You Begin Learning the Tarot?

  1. Start with the 22 Major cards: The Major Arcana are the skeleton of the whole system and the protagonists of "The Fool's Journey" — beginning here is the easiest way to build a feel for the cards.
  2. Look at the image before the book: When you first see a card, let your intuition respond to the picture — it will stir something deep within you and bring insight. A book of meanings is a crutch; intuition is your own two legs.
  3. Draw one card a day: Build a relationship with your deck through a daily card, and each evening reflect on how the day echoed the card — you will progress remarkably fast.
  4. Cherish your deck: The deeper the emotional bond you build with it, the more fully you will grasp the meaning held within the cards.
